Gas Logs

There are three basic gas log systems. Traditional Vent, Reduced Vent, and Vent-Free. There are several sub-groups relating to the type of log (ceramic or ceramic fiber), as well as different types of control systems (adjustable height, stepped controls, remote-capable & manual)

Traditional vent systems are usually a Burner pan full of sand or vermiculite which allows the gas to rise and ignite in a random pattern. This gives a nice large fire with dancing flames and glowing embers. Typical gas usage is about 75,000 btu per hour. These systems more closely resemble a real wood fire in appearance and heat output. They are usually sold as decorative appliances and do not require efficiency ratings, although unofficially they hover around 45%. These logsets require the typical 30" long damper to be open about 2-3 inches. The damper on all vented systems should be fixed open with a clamp which comes with each set.

Reduced vent logs are very similar to their traditional counterparts except that their gas input is reduced to about 45,000 btu and the damper opening can be reduced to 1-2 inches. The flame is usually more toward the front and the difference in gas usage is not apparent by looking at the fire.

Vent-free gas logs are a different animal entirely. At 99% efficiency they are very efficient heaters which are designed to be operated with the flue closed. These systems use room air to burn the fire and return all of the combustion byproducts to the room. The main byproducts being carbon dioxide and water vapor. These units also produce small amounts of carbon monoxide and nitros oxide, but they are tested to be well below normal human tolerances. They are ideal for large drafty rooms where extra heat is necessary, but in a smaller room the extra heat will blow you out. You must provide adequate ventilation with these units. All manufacturers suggest that you operate them with a window slightly open. If the room level oxygen drops below 18% all units will shut off due to the oxygen depletion pilot system which is mandatory on all vent-free products.
